5 of the best real ‘games of summer’
With the end of summer around the corner, it’s time to take as much advantage of these long, lazy days as possible. And whether you’re planning a BBQ or just spending the day outside with the family, backyard games are a hit with folks of all ages. 1. Cornhole:
It is a classic that is perfect for adults or kids. The point of the game is to throw bean bags into a hole at the end of a raised platform. You can play it with 2-4 people, and you’ll need two platforms and 8 bags (4 of one color and 4 of the other). Players receive 3 points for each bag that makes it into a hole and 1 point for every bag that lands on the platforms. You can place the platforms further apart for adults or older children, or closer together if you’re letting the little ones compete.
2. Wiffle Ball:
It is essentially baseball, but without the broken windows. It’s easier for children since the bat and ball are so light, and oftentimes it’s fun for adults who turn it into, uh, more challenging wiffle ball (you drink, put your head on the bat, and spin in circles before attempting to hit the ball and run). It’s a great activity for teaching youngsters the basics of baseball and also fun watching adults clamber around like, well, children.
3. Yard Twister:
Twister has been around since 1966, but if you’ve ever played you may notice that the mat isn’t always large enough and it tends to get really crumpled. Yard twister changes everything. You’ll need a large area of grass and some spray paint to mark the ground (this will eventually come out as the grass grows). Use the spray to make circles and make the game board as large or as small (and complex) as you’d like.
4. Scavenger Hunt:
There is something about a scavenger hunt that makes an outing fun for everyone. Whether it’s the thrill of the competition or the curiosity that comes with not knowing what you will encounter, anyone can have fun playing. Organizing one for both kids and adults? Create two different contests and let the games begin!
5. Slip ‘N Slide:
If you slid down one of these in a while you may not remember what you’re missing out on. There are few things better than water on a hot summer day, and there is no shortage of it with water slides. They range in price from $10 on up, depending on the brand and length, or you can get creative with any slick surface and make your own. The kids will love it and you may find yourself fighting to be next in line.
