Just Because It’s Hot Out Doesn’t Mean You Should Neglect Your Fitness Routine
We get it. It gets pretty hot here in South Florida. (And by pretty hot, we mean extremely unbearable and unreasonably uncomfortable). Because the sun just loves glaring down on us throughout the summer, heating up our backyards, the roads, and the parks, it can be hard to find an exercise routine that you can manage without suffering from heat exhaustion. If you’re looking for a less strenuous way to get in shape while still enjoying the great outdoors this season, here are a few ideas:
1. Water aerobics
Water aerobics, also known as aquacise, might get a bad rap because many athletes think of it as an easy workout for older folks. But watch out, grandma. People of all ages are starting to gain interest in aquatic exercise routines. And with good reason.
Exercising in the water has tremendous benefits. It’s low-impact, meaning it’s easy on your joints. On top of that, exercising in the water keeps your entire body cool while you make your moves, and that’s great for endurance. Plus, the water’s natural resistance makes it perfect for milder forms of strength training.
2. Hit the ocean!
Similarly, swimming at the beach is a great workout. It keeps you cool while ramping up your cardio for the day, and it has added benefits compared to laps in a pool. The waves make for a much more difficult swim, which means you’re going to burn more calories in the surf than you will in a calm body of water like the pool or a lake.
3. Jumping on a trampoline
Spending time on a trampoline can be a great (and super fun!) workout. Once you hop on one for the first time in years, you’ll be surprised at how much it takes out of you — but the fun of jumping around and trying out new tricks makes it much easier on you than going out on a hot run in the searing sun. Plus, a 10-minute bout on a trampoline burns as many calories as a 30-minute jog!
And although you might not realize how intense your workout is, just wait for the next day. Your legs and hips are most likely going to be sore (which isn’t a bad thing) because the activity allows you to engage new muscles that you don’t typically use in your normal workout routine.
Work out your way this summer. But be sure to protect yourself when you’re in your backyard
With mosquito-borne illness on the rise, it’s more important than ever to keep yourself and your family protected, especially in the comfort of your own backyard. Don’t let the pests get to you — install a mosquito misting system to prevent them from spreading their diseases to those you care about most.
