You don’t need an interior decorator to make the back of your house feel like part of your home
Summer may be over but that doesn’t mean your backyard use has expired. HGTV has ranked their favorite backyard décor that makes the great outdoors even more enjoyable. The rankings took into consideration the findings from the American Society of Landscape Architects’ (ASLA) 2013 Residential Design Trends Survey, where residential landscape architects were asked to rate the anticipated popularity of outdoor design elements. HGTV also considered their experiences when navigating through people’s homes and what they enjoyed from each backyard. We’ve captured a few from their list for you to consider when you’re looking for ways to liven your backyard.
1. Gardens
According to the ASLA, gardens are the most popular design element for a backyard. This includes flower gardens as well as fruit and vegetable ones. With organic eating becoming more in-demand, people have started to seek out food they can trust – and what’s more trusting than the food you grew yourself? Gardens are not only ideal for eating, but they can also be used to decorate and highlight different areas of your backyard to offer an environment of serenity and peace.
2. Grills
While fire pits beat grills in ASLA’s survey, HGTV believes that grills should be a staple for every backyard. Grills are more convenient, affordable and manageable. In addition, it’s a nice outdoor activity that can include the whole family. What’s the fun in eating outside if it’s not over some burgers and hotdogs? This brings us to the next point on the list.
3. Outdoor dining areas
Doesn’t everything seem to taste better when it’s eaten outside? Take advantage of the extra space your backyard contains by adding an additional table for guests. To maximize comfort levels, choose chairs with comfortable cushioning so guests aren’t in a rush to get back in the AC. Chairs with linings or ones made of wood are not recommended. Have fun with it – bring your indoor color schemes outside to give your home some extra personality.
4. Decks
While you’re in the midst of adding some outdoor dining space, consider placing it on a deck. Decks are must-have items for homeowners as it allows you to extend your indoor living space into the backyard. Decks also allow for added texture and depth, giving your home a more spacious look and feel. If you’re looking for something low-maintenance, consider composite materials over wood. You’ll also want to make sure to choose a material that’s easy to clean and won’t get damaged by rain.
5. Hot tubs or other water activities
Spa features, such as hot tubs or whirlpools, are always a favorite outdoor recreation amenity. If you want guests to enjoy your backyard, they need to have something to do! Anything from a sauna to a whirlpool can get people excited to test out and makes for a great outdoor activity regardless of the weather.
6. Fencing
Fencing popularity ranked highest amongst outdoor structures in the survey and HGTV knows why. Fences not only aid in privacy but also create the perfect backdrop for your garden or outdoor dining area. In addition, there are limitless options to choose from – each with a defining feature that can really define your backyard.
7. Backyard Bars
Adding a bar to your backyard is the #1 way to get guests enjoying the outside of your home. Not only is it great for entertaining but the additional counter space and seating are extremely desirable for making your backyard the newest hangout spot.
8. Mosquito Misting System
It may not be considered a design, but it is a necessity. It’s safe to say that you’re not looking to invite mosquitos to your next outdoor BBQ, and we wouldn’t either. That’s why the team at Platinum Mosquito has developed a silent but deadly misting system to ensure your unwanted house guests are not ruining your newly decorated backyard. Although HGTV has yet to find a spot for our system on their favorite backyard design lists, we know we’re getting close.
