Every Floridan knows how pesky mosquitoes can be, and a handful is familiar with the sensation of being constantly singled out by the local mosquito population. This may seem like a coincidence, but the fact is that some people are just more attractive to hungry mosquitoes. There are many ways that mosquitoes locate their meals—here are just a few of them:
? Carbon Dioxide
One chemical that mosquitoes use to detect their prey is carbon dioxide. The mosquitoes can sense CO2 from a range of up to 75 feet, which will draw them to candles, fires, and individuals who are breathing heavily due to exercise.
? Lactic Acid
Another scent that attracts mosquitoes is lactic acid. Along with other acids and similar chemicals, lactic acid is created when muscles are made to work during intense physical activity. It is also released after eating foods with electrolytes like salt and potassium.
? Body Heat
Mosquitoes also use heat to track prey, using sensitive heat receptors to lock onto the temperatures produced by the circulation of blood. This allows the mosquitoes to find their next meal without even needing to see it.
? Moisture
Moisture is produced by exhalation, perspiration, and of course, bodies of water. This lets mosquitoes know where to find not only animals to feed on, but also ponds, lakes, and other breeding grounds.
? Visual Stimulation
Along with chemical and temperature sensors, mosquitoes use sight to hunt. The mosquito’s vision is somewhat limited, so bright colors and motion is particularly attractive to them.
