Mosquito control is necessary for the Florida summer, especially if you plan on spending time in your backyard. Unfortunately, for homes with small children, the insecticides involved can be incredibly harsh. Luckily, there are some nice compromises: natural insecticides that kill and repel mosquitos without harming children.
Pyrethrum
Pyrethrum is an all-natural insecticide that is derived from African Chrysanthemum flowers. It is toxic to ants, crickets, spiders, wasps, fleas, and virtually every other type of pest. Because it breaks down in the environment quickly, it is approved for use both indoors and outdoors, as well as in restaurants and farms.
Permethrin
While Pyrethrum is found naturally, Permethrin is a synthetic pesticide based on Pyrethrum. It belongs to a type of insecticide designed to meet or exceed the effectiveness of Pyrethrum while lasting longer. Where Pyrethrum will break down in about 12 hours, Permethrin remains for upwards of 30 days, making it incredibly effective at residential mosquito control.
What are the Differences?
While both are essentially based on chrysanthemum flowers, they are not the same. Permethrin is designed for maximum effectiveness over a longer period of time, making it an excellent longer-term mosquito control tool, while Pyrethrum is safer for your local environment, making it effective for short-term needs—like repelling mosquitos during a pool party. When choosing between the two, you need to weigh these two mosquito control options against each other.
Mosquito control doesn’t have to use harsh chemicals to be effective. Pyrethrum and Permethrin have shown to be incredibly effective methods of mosquito control without the harshness of traditional pest control chemicals.
