A Look at How Mosquito Misting Works

Time-release outdoor residential misting systems are the latest weapons being used in Miami to control mosquitoes around the home. Mosquito misting is an effective way to rid your property of mosquitoes and other nuisance insects so you can enjoy your time spent outdoors. If you want to get back to hosting outdoor barbecues and lounging around your backyard patio with friends and family, mosquito misting can help. Here’s a look at how these systems work.

The insecticide products most often used in outdoor mosquito misting systems contain Pyrethrin, Permethrin, and Piperonyl Butoxide (PBO). PBO alters the penetration of the insecticides and decreases the time required for effect on the mosquito’s central nervous system. It also prevent mosquitoes from developing a resistance to the insecticide, which increases the effectiveness of the misting system and helps keep mosquito populations down.

Delivery System

Mosquito misting systems utilize spray nozzles that are mounted around the perimeter or your home or backyard fencing to deliver the pesticides into the air. The spray nozzles are connected by tubing to a supply of insecticide and operate either automatically on a timer or manually using a switch or remote controller.

Although there is the possibility that people and pets may be exposed to pesticides used in a residential misting system, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) does not expect risks of concern to humans when these chemicals are used outdoors in accordance with specific labeling. Part of the reason for this assessment is the fact that the pesticides used in a mosquito misting system last only short periods in the environment, so the risk of long-term exposure to humans is extremely low.
