Helpful tips if you’re pregnant or just want to keep your family protected

Death, taxes, and mosquitos. Why is it that the things you can count on most are mostly bad things? There is some positive news, however. While the first two on that list you probably won’t be able to do anything about, mosquitos are something you can control. Or, at the very least, you can do things to keep them away from you. This is particularly important if you are pregnant or have young children. Use this guide to keep yourself and everyone else safe:

Be sure everybody covers up

This can be tough in South Florida, but one of the best ways to avoid mosquito bites is by keeping your skin covered. This means pants, long sleeves, and socks. If it just gets too hot for so much clothing, there is a solution:

Use permethrin

Permethrin is an insecticide proven to repel mosquitos. You can buy it in aerosol cans and use it on the clothing of adults, kids, and babies. Once clothes are sprayed down and allowed to completely dry, it will help keep those nasty ankle biters away.

Don’t forget the repellant

You may think if you’re already pretty covered up and doused in permethrin that should be enough, right? Well, no. Mosquitos are smarter than they look. If you’ve got some skin showing, they’ll find it, which is why you also need to apply insect repellent too. This is perfectly safe for pregnant women. It is not recommended for children under two months, however. And if you will be putting on sunscreen, be sure to do that first. If sunscreen is put on after repellent, the repellent won’t be as effective.

Pick up some wipes

Nobody likes being sprayed with repellent, especially kids. To avoid having to chase your little ones around, there’s a better alternative: repellent wipes. These can be much easier to use and you don’t have to worry about spills or leaks.

Fortify your home

When dealing with mosquitos, you need to think of them as the enemy. They can carry a host of diseases, which means you have to do what you can to keep them away from your family. Taking a good inventory of your home can be a huge help. Make sure all window screens are intact. Regularly look for standing water in and around your yard and dump it.

Install a misting system

The above tips are useful, but they take a lot of effort on your part. Wouldn’t it be nice if you didn’t have to work so hard to keep mosquitos away? That’s what a misting system is for. Once one is set up in your yard, you don’t have to do anything except refill the tank, and you may never see another mosquito again.
